TALIS Video Study
We are delighted to say that our school has recently agreed to participate in an innovative and exciting international study being conducted by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). The TALIS Video Study will look to improve understanding about which aspects of mathematics teaching are related to pupil learning and the nature of those relationships. Nine countries including England are participating in the study (Japan, Chile, Mexico, Columbia, Spain (specifically Madrid), the US, China (specifically Shanghai), Germany and England). The study will therefore also contribute to our knowledge of how teachers teach mathematics in different countries and contexts. England’s involvement is being managed by Education Development Trust working on behalf of the Department for Education (DfE) and in partnership with Oxford University. Education Development Trust is a large not-for profit organisation which transforms lives around the globe by improving schools and school systems both in the UK and overseas, whilst investing annually in a programme of educational research.
The TALIS Video Study will involve the videoing of two maths lesson delivered to a year 10 mathematics class. In addition, both the teacher and their students will be invited to complete a questionnaire. The student questionnaire will include questions about their motivation and confidence in mathematics. Students will also take a mathematics test either before or after the recorded lesson. Your child’s information will be stored securely and confidentially. Further details on this can be found in the consent form that pupil’s in some year 11 classes will bringing home shortly, detailing their participation in the study. We would encourage all parents and carers to read the forms and sign them to agree to your son or daughter’s involvement in the pilot video study. In doing so, you will be supporting important international work on improving teaching quality all over the world and affecting the educational success/life chances of many pupils of mathematics.
